What to pay attention to regarding the storage environment of quilts?

Dec 19, 2025

The correct storage environment directly affects the fluffiness, warmth, and durability of the quilt.

The following are key environmental control elements:

1. Moisture and Humidity Control is the Primary Principle

A humid environment is the biggest enemy of quilt maintenance. Whether it's a down comforter or a cotton quilt, prolonged exposure to a humid environment can lead to mildew, odor, and clumping of the filling material.

Humidity Control: The storage environment should be kept dry, with a recommended relative humidity between 40%-60%.

Avoid Sealed Storage: Do not store quilts in sealed plastic bags.  Enclosed spaces cannot dissipate residual moisture, easily leading to dampness.

2. Avoid High Temperature and Sun Exposure

Although sunlight can kill bacteria, prolonged exposure to sunlight will damage the elasticity of the quilt fibers and the fluffiness of the filling material.

Sunlight Exposure Time Control: It is recommended to air dry in a well-ventilated area for 1-2 hours, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Avoid High-Temperature Storage: Do not store quilts in direct sunlight or near heat sources such as heaters or air conditioners to prevent the filling material from hardening and aging.

3. Prevent Compression and Deformation

Quilts should be stored in a flat space to avoid compression that can lead to thinning or loss of elasticity. Flat Storage:  Store the quilt flat whenever possible, avoiding folding and stacking. If folding is necessary, it is recommended to turn it over periodically (e.g., every three months) to prevent permanent deformation caused by long-term creases.
Avoid Stacking Heavy Objects: Do not place heavy objects or other clothing on top of the quilt during storage to prevent the filling from collapsing due to prolonged pressure.

4. Clean Storage

Ensure the quilt is clean before storing to prevent insect infestation and bacterial growth.

Timely Cleaning: It is recommended to wash the quilt when not in use, ensuring it is completely dry before storing.
Use Moth Repellent: When storing, you can place moth repellent bags or scented sachets to keep it fresh and prevent moth damage.
